- Compound words
- these have one meaning so they are one morpheme
- Connotative Clues
- Context clues that help the reader understand without a pure definintion

- Denotative Clues
- Gives you a pure definition
- Developing Print Awarenes
- Have lots of print around to encourage students to see it and read it.
- Environmental Print
- Have students begin to understand things like the McDondald's logo and what it means.
- Invented Spelling
- Bring the student in to the process and have them try to write and spell
- Semantic Clues
- Meaning clues, we pick what makes sense for the sentence
- Sight Words
- These are words students should know just by seeing them.
- Structural Analysis
- Think it out - figure out the word by using its structure. Think of prefixes and suffixes and what they do to the word.
- Syntactic Clues
- These are grammar rules - the word must be correct for the grammar in the sentence.
- Word Derivation
- think of the Greek and Latin roots
