- What is stereotype threat?
- Discomfort that an individual feels when they are at risk of confirming a negative stereotype about their group
- Why has stereotype threat become popular in research?
-
Because it shows gaps in research that we weren’t aware of
AND
Because it has high applicability and can be seen in other races and genders - Is stereotype threat only limited to minorities and women’s performance in school? If not give examples?
- No it’s not only limited to them. It’s also seen in gay daycare workers, female drivers and white athletes.
- Where do the roots of stereotype threat research stem from?
- Academic testing
- Is there a lot of new research stemming from stereotype threat? Yes or No?
- Yes
- How is stereotype threat produced?
- Through situational cues in the enviroment
- When situtational cues tell us our identity might be of importance in a situation what process gets activated?
- The vigilance process
- What are the 2 options that can occur once the vigilance process is activated?
-
If the individual observes the situational cues and thinks their identity is being negatively evaluated their threat goes away and vigilance goes down
BUT
If the individual observes the situational cues and believes their identity is going to be devalued their vigilance increases and everything freaks them out - What did the study on MSE majors and MSE summer conference 3:1 men to women ratio vs 1:1 men to women ratio find?
- It found when women watched the 3:1 men to women commercial they felt less belonging and didn't want to attend, they felt stress and were more vigilant than the 1:1 men to women ratio who felt normal
- Are thresholds for threat appraisal the same across all people?
- No, different people are more susceptible to feeling threat than others
