Embryology
The study of the 38-week prenatal period is called embryology. Embryology helps one understand the basic organization of the human body, as well as the origin of birth defects.
Prenatal vs Embryotic period
embryonic period, during which the basic body plan is established, is the first 8 weeks of prenatal development. Embryotic period primarily a time of growth and maturation, is the remaining 30 weeks.
Ectoderm and endoderm
Ectoderm and endoderm are epithelial tissues (sheets of closely attached cells).
Mesoderm
Mesoderm, is a mesenchyme tissue - muscle, bone, dermis & connective tissue
epithelial tissues
(sheets of closely attached cells).
endoderm
epithelial tissues - Forms respiratory tubes, digestive organs, and urinary bladder-inner epithelial lining of the gut tube
Ectoderm
epithelial tissues -
forms brain, spinal cord, and epidermis
Notochord
defines the body axis and later forms each nucleus pulposus of the vertebral column.
Neurulation
ectoderm starts forming brain and spinal cord
