- Transitional epithelium
- Multiple layers of cells which appear cuboidal when not stretched, but squamous when stretched; found in the urinary organs
- Tissues
- Groups of closely associated cells that are similar in structure and perform a common function
- Avascular
- Has no blood vessels
- epidermis
- Superficial layer of the skin made up of keratinised stratified squamous epithelium
- Reticular lamina
- Extracellular material containing fine collagenous or reticular fibres secreted by connective tissue cells abutting the basal lamina
- Cuboidal cells
- Epithelial cells that are approximately as tall as they are wide
- Simple Squamous Epithelium
- Single layer of thin cells found where filtration or exchange of substances by diffusion takes place
- Epithelial tissue
- Tissue specialised for the covering and lining the body and organs, and glands
- Lumen
- The cavity or channel within a tubular structure
- stratified columnar epithelium
- Several layers with the top layer having tall cells; found in small amounts at epithelial junctions in the digestive tract and the conjunctiva.
- Basement membrane
- The material formed by the basal and reticular laminae on which epithelial tissue is supported, defining the boundary of epithelial tissue.
- stratified cuboidal epithelium
- Two layers of cube-like cells found in ducts of sweat glands, mammary glands and salivary glands
- Goblet cell
- Unicellular exocrine gland which secretes mucin; found in the digestive tract
- Columnar cells
- Epithelial cells that are tall and column-shaped
- keratinised stratified squamous epithelium
- Multiple layers of flat cells of which the top layers has dead cells filled with keratin; forms the skin
- Squamous cells
- Flattened and scalelike epithelial cells
- Epithelium
- Epithelial tissue
- Apical surface
- The surface of cell exposed to lumen or exterior
- pseudostratified epithelium
- Single layer of cells of DIFFERING HEIGHTS; found in the male urethra and upper respiratory tract; may be ciliated.
- Pseudostratified
- Tissues that look like they have more than one layer, but actually don't
- Simple epithelium
- A single layer of epithelial cells
- Stratified epithelium
- Multiple cell layers of epithelial cells
- Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
- Single layer of cuboidal cells found in kidney tubules, ducts of small glands and ovary surface
- Simple Columnar Epithelium
- Single layer of tall cells found lining most of the digestive tract; may be ciliated
- stratified squamous epithelium
- Multiple layers of flat cells; found in the mouth, oesophagus and vagina
- Basal lamina
- A nonliving adhesive material formed largely of glycoproteins secreted by the epithelial cells
- Histology
- The study of tissues
- Mesothelium
- The simple squamous epithelium forming the serosae of the ventral body cavities
- protection, absorption, filtration, secretion
- Four functions of epithelial tissues
