Church Modes
Historical discrepancies aside, here is a review of what are known as the "church modes". Definitions courtesy of Benward & Saker Music in Theory and Practice (Seventh edition, Vol. 1). This only works if one tests with definitions before terms.

- Dorian (I)
- Natural minor scale with raised sixth degree.
- Phrygian (III)
- Natural minor scale with lowered second degree.
- Lydian (V)
- Major scale with raised fourth degree.
- Mixolydian (VII)
- Major scale with lowered seventh degree.
- Authentic Modes
- I, III, V, VII, IX, XI OR Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Ionian
- Plagal Modes
- II, IV, VI, VIII, X, XII OR Hypodorian, Hypophrygian, Hypolydian, Hypomixolydian, Hypoaeolian, Hypoionian
- Dorian (I)
- Final is always the second degree of a major scale.
- Phrygian (III)
- Final is always the third degree of a major scale.
- Lydian (V)
- Final is always the fourth degree of a major scale.
- Mixolydian (VII)
- Final is always the fifth degree of a major scale.
- Aeolian (IX)
- Final is always the sixth degree of a major scale.
- Ionian (XI)
- Final is always the first degree of a major scale.
- Aeolian (IX)
- Same as natural minor scale.

- Same as major scale.
- Dorian (I)
- Half steps between: 2-3, 6-7
- Phrygian (III)
- Half steps between: 1-2, 5-6
- Lydian (V)
- Half steps between: 4-5, 7-8
- Mixolydian (VII)
- Half steps between: 3-4, 6-7
- Aeolian (IX)
- Half steps between: 2-3, 5-6
- Ionian (XI)
- Half steps between: 3-4, 7-8
