- marks or scratches on the emulsion surface of photogrpahic materials (usually film)
- abrasions

- the blackness of an area in a negative or print that is determined by the amount of light that can pass through a negative or reflect from a print
- density
- the spreading of a light ray after it passes near the edge of an object
- diffraction
- defects in the shape of an image caused by certain types of lenses
- distortion
- a method of mounting prints on cardboard or similar materials by means of heat pressure, and tissue impregnated with shellac
- drymounting
- holds photographic paper flat for explosure under the enlarger
- easel
- lighting the subject in such away as to produce a minimum of shadows and contrast in the subject
- flat lighting
- darkening or discoloring of a negative or print caused by extraneous light of chemical action
- fog
- a blur, or halo effect, that sometimes occurs around a bright subject
- halation
- the distance from the camera beyond which no further focusing adjustment is required to maintain a sharp image
- infinity
- used to describe a finish on paper-nonglossy or dull
- matte
- used to describe paper with a smooth surface which can be used for ferrotyping
- glossy
- incapable of transmitting light. also a commercial product which is painted on a negative to black out an area
- opaque
- the range of grays (densities) in a photographic image
- tonal scale
- the shades of red and orange (brown) in a black and white image
- warm tones
- refers to the thickness of photographic paper
