- mutation
- any event that changes genetic structure; any alteration in the inherited nucleic acid sequence of the genotype of an organism

- the act of making and recording a measurement
- trade-offs
- An exchange of one thing in return for another to achieve a desired result.
- inference
- Inference is the act or process of deriving a conclusion based solely on what one already knows
- fossil record
- The physical proof of fossils found deep underground that helps us to understand the sequence of events over time in respect to which organisms were alive, where they lived, what they looked like and so forth.
- family
- a group of objects united by a significant shared characteristic
- habitat
- Place where an organism or a biological population normally lives or occurs
- stratigraphic column
- chronological sequence of sedimentary rock layers.
- hypothesis
- A supposition or tentative explanation for (a group of) phenomena, (a set of) facts, or a scientific inquiry that may be tested, verified or answered by further investigation or methodological experiment
- variation
- n instance of change; the rate or magnitude of change
- evolution
- the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth
- extinction
- the state or process of a species, family, or larger group being or becoming extinct
- species
- (biology) taxonomic group whose members can interbreed
- evidence
- the available body of facts or information indicating whether a belief or proposition is true or valid
- vertebrate
- animals having a bony or cartilaginous skeleton with a segmented spinal column and a large brain enclosed in a skull or cranium
- extinct
- (of a species, family, or other larger group) having no living members
- adaptation
- the action or progress of adapting or being adapted
- natural selection
- survival: a natural process resulting in the evolution of organisms best adapted to the environment

- Dug out of the earth; as, fossil coal; fossil salt.
