- abrasion
- injury in which superficial layers of skin are scraped or rubbed away
- abscess
- a localized collection of pus with a circumscribed area; associated with tissue destruction
- acne vulgaris
- chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by pustular eruptions of the skin in or near the sebaceous glands; common during puberty and adolescence
- actinic keratosis
- precancerous skin lesion caused by excessive exposure to the sun; raised rough, dry, or scaly spots that are tan, brown, grey, or red
- albinism
- absence of pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes
- alopecia
- loss of hair
- anhidrosis
- condition of lacking sweat
- basal cell carcinoma
- an epithelial malignant tumor of the skin; rarely metastasizes
- bite
- an injury in which the skin is torn by an insect, animal, or human, resulting in an abrasion, puncture, or laceration

- an acute infectious process caused by the varicella zoster virus; shingles

- a contagious skin disease characterized by papules, vesicles, pustules, burrows, and intense itching; caused by the tub mite
- scale
- a thin, dry flake of cornified epithelial cells; psoriasis

- the mark left by the healing process of a wound, sore, or injury
- scleroderma
- an autoimmune disorder that causes abnormal thickening of the skin; some forms of the disease spread to other organs and can be fatal
- seborrhea
- any of several common skin conditions in which there is an overproduction of sebum
- seborrheic dermatitis
- inflammation of the upper layers of the skin caused by seborrhea; results in the scaling of the scalp known as dandruff
- seborrheic keratosis
- a benign flesh-colored, brown, or black skin tumor; tend to occur most often in the elderly (liver spots)
- skin tags
- small, flesh-colored or light brown growths that hang from the body by fine stalks
- squamous cell carcinoma
- malignant tumor of the squamous cells of the epithelium; can quickly spread to other body systems
