Embargo
Jefferson thought this embargo would "teach" a lesson --> 100 need the US to stop the bad things you're doing! We won't trade with you until you stop your bad ways. Our main trdaing partner is Great Britain. The US sells raw material to Europe and we but finished products from their factories

Undid unpopular Federalist laws such as the Whiskey Tax. Cut government spending and reduced the size of army/navy

US won but it was after Peace Treaty. Andrew Jackson was the hero

The 1820 ruling that admitted Missouri as a slave state

Made in 1820. 1) Missouri slave state 2) For future- north of 36'30 would be free; South would be slave. Only deals with land in the Louisiana Purchase.
Robert Fulton

Owned by Spain, sold to US in pieces. The last and largest piece is Florida's peninsula sold in 1819
Francis Scott Key
wrote poem "Star Spangled Banner" while watching Fort McHerny being bombed September 1814 . Became the National Anthem in 1931

Great Britain
Made USA angry because 1)they traded guns for the Native Americans and used guns to atatck settlers on the frontier. 2) impressment sailers on the high seas
South (region)
Cotton became the most important crop "King Cotton" - more acres planted cotton than any other crop. Cotton brings in the most money- greater dependence on slave labor because slaves did the work. Now that cotton is a profitable crop more farms grow it. More slaves are needed to do work
New Orleans
Important to USA because this was the port city for Western farmers. The Mississippi River was the highway for these farmers and their products
Commander Oliver Perry
Won the first naval battle on lake Erie. Important because it was Americans first win-1813
Cotton gin
Invented by Eli Whitney in 1793. It removed seeds from cotton fibers. Now cotton could be processed quickly and cheaply. Results: more cotton is grown and more slaves are needed for more acres of cotton fields
War of 1812
Started June 1812; Peace Treaty signed December 1814; Last battle January 1815; Results: 1) no land gained/lost 2) impressment ended 3) England no longer sold guns to Native Americans thereby making the frontier safe for new settlers 4) Americans gained confidence in itself by defeating the British twice
Louisiana Purchase
the purchase in 1803 of French lands in North America that doubled the size of the United States
Industrial Revolution
The period of great change in how people lived and made products, brought about by power- driven machines
Erie Canal
in NY went from Albany(Hudson R.) to Buffalo(Lake Erie) linked great lakes with Atlantic Ocean(NYC.) finished in 1825
Slavery
Northerners wanted to keep slavery and cut off new territory/states. North was not ready to fight slavery in South

Sammual F.B. Morise
Invented the telegraph/Morise code. Important because it reduced time to send messages to distant places
Tariff
Is a tax put on imported products to make prices higher than some American products. Now American made cost less. Liked by North because their factory products could compete with Europeans because American products could be cheaper. If factories are producted they can sell more American products- employ more people. Not liked by South- they felt they should not have to pay an unfair higher price for imports
