- 14th amendment
- all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside
- Articles of Confederation
- document that created the first central government for the United States; was replaced by the Constitutionn in 1789
- Bill of Rights
- first 10 amendments to the Constitution; ratified in 1791
- 7th amendment
- the right to trial by jury
- Emancipation Proclamation
- order issued by President Lincoln freeing the slaves in areas rebelling against the Union; took effect January 1, 1863
- 5th amendment
- the right to due process of law
- Mayflower Compact
- document written by the Pilgrims that establishes general guidelines for self government
- 13th amendment
- neither slavery nor involuntary servitude except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction

- the freedom of press, speech, religion, petition, and assembly
- Magna Carta
- Great Charter; agreed to by King John of England, it gave nobles and other individuals greater rights and made it clear that the nobility and monarchs must obey the law
- US Constitution
- document of basic principles that determines the powers and duties of the US government- based on federalism
- Declaration of Independence
- statement of the Second Continental Congress that defined the colonists' rights, outlined their complaints against Great Britain, and declared the colonies' independence

- the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall note be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude
