AFFIDAVIT
A written account of facts the provider swears to be the truth.
BROADCASTING
The transmission of radio or television messages over the public airwaves to a broad audience.
CENSORSHIP
The act of suppressing information or content deemed to be objectionable.
CIVIL LIBERTARIAN
A person committed to protecting the civil liberties of all individuals.
CIVIL LIBERTIES
Rights guaranteed to all individuals by law or judicial interpretation.
COMMERCIAL SPEECH
Advertising messages that receive limited protection under the First Amendment.
CONSTITUTIONAL LAW
The area of law that involves interpreting and enforcing the rights provided by the US Constitution.
CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT
A provision guaranteed by the US Constitution, such as the right to freedom of speech.
ENFORCEMENT
The act of compelling compliance with a law, regulation, policy or guideline.
FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION (FCC)
The independent agency of the US government charged with regulating communications occuring by cable, radio, television, satellite and related means.
FIRST AMENDMENT
The amendment to the US Constitution that states, in part, "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech or of the press."
FREEDOM OF SPEECH
The right guaranteed to US citizens that allows them to speak freely on all types of matters without fear of reprisal from the US government. Also used to describe similar rights provided to individuals by other governments throughout the world.
HATE SPEECH
Speech acts that are motivated by prejudice against one or more particular social groups.
INDECENCY
The quality of being unseemly or inappropriate.
INTERNET
A high-speed data communications network linking public and private computer networks around the world.
