List the layers of the atmosphere.
Troposphere
Stratosphere
Mesosphere
Thermosphere
What is Conduction ?
Type of heat transfer by the collision of atoms through a solid
What is Radiation?
Transfer of electromagnetic energy through space in the form of invisible transverse waves. No medium is required.
What is Convection?
Transfer of heat energy by movement of liquids and gases by differences in density.
Hot air rises, cold air sinks
What is Kinetic Energy?
Energy released when objects are in motion
What is potential Energy?
Energy which is stored. It has the ability to do work.
What is Specific Heat?
The quantity of heat needed to raise the temperature of one gram of a substance one degree celsius.
**The higher the specific heat of substance, the greater the amount of heat needed to raise its temperature.
Liquid water takes the longest to heat up and cool down.
What is Latent Heat?
Type of potential energy which occurs during a change of state, or a phase change.
Example: when a solid changes to a liquid , the temperature of the substance remains the same even though heat is being added.
Which phase changes require the addition of heat?
Melting (solid to liquid) 80 cal/g

Evaporation (liquid to gas) 540 cal/g
Which phase changes require the release of heat?
Freezing (liquid to soild) 80 cal/g

Condensation (gas to liquid) 540 cal/g
What is Insolation?
INcoming SOLar radiATION. Solar radition is the major source of energy for Earth

Very hot objects, like the Sun give off short waves (visible light)

Cooler objects, like Earth radiate longer waves (infrared)
What is absorption?
When waves are taking into a substance. Example ozone layer absorbs UV rays, water vapor and carbon dioxide absorb infrared radiation
What is relection?
Bouncing off of waves by a substance. example waves may bounce off clouds.
What is Refraction?
The bending of waves as it passes through a material.
What is the Greenhouse Effect?
The process which allows short wave radiation (visible light) to pass through the atmosphere, but greenhouse gases (methane, CFC's, water vapor, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oixide) traps long wave radiation (infrared ) in the atmosphere .
Which layer of the atmosphere
does all our weather occur?
Troposphere
Which layer of the atmosphere contains the ozone layer?
Stratosphere?
What is the temperature at the mesopause?
- 90 degrees celsius
Describe the surface charactersitics of a substance if it is a good absorber and radiator of energy.
Black in color
Rough and dull texture

Soil and blacktop are good absorbers
Describe the surface charactersitics of a substance if it is a good reflector and poor radiator of energy.
Light in color
shiny and smooth texture

Snow is a good relector.
