- agglutination
- clumping of foreign cells induced by cross linking of antigen-antibody complexes
- anemia
- reduced oxygen carrying ability of the blood caused by a decreased number of erythrocytes or decreased percentage of hemoglobin in the blood
- basophils
- white blood cells whose granules stain deep blue with basic dye; have a relatively pale nucleus and granular appearing cytoplasm
- coagulation
- clotting (of blood)
- eosinophils
- granular WBCs whose granules readily take up a stain called eosin
- erythrocytes
- red blood cells
- fibrin
- the fibrous insoluble protein formed during the clotting of blood
- formed elements
- cellular portion of blood
- hemoglobin
- the oxygen-transporting pigment of erythrocytes
- leukocytes
- white blood cells
- lymphocytes
- agranular white blood cells formed in the bone marrow that mature in the lymphoid tissue
- monocytes
- large single-nucleus white blood cell; agranular leukocyte
- neurtrophils
- the most abundant of the white blood cells
- plasma
- the fluid portion of the blood
- platelets
- one of the irregular cell fragments of blood; involved in clotting
- prothrombin
- A plasma protein that is converted into thrombin during blood clotting.
- thromboplastin
- A protease that converts prothrombin to thrombin in the early stages of blood clotting. Also called thrombokinase
- artery
- a vessel that carries blood away from heart
- atrium
- a chamber of the heart receiving blood from the veins
- capillary
- a minute blood vessel connection aterioles with venules
- cardiac cycle
- sequence of events encompassing one complete contraction and relaxation of the atria and ventricles of the heart
- cardiac output
- the blood volume ejected per minute by the left ventricle
- pulse
- the rhythmic expansion and recoil of arteries resulting from the heart contraction; can be felt from outside of body
- systemic circulation
- system of blood vessels that carries nutrient and oxygen rich blood to all body parts
- ventricles
- discharging chambers of the heart
