What are the 5 main types of blood vessels?
arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules, and veins
What is the main function of arteries?
carry blood away from the heart
What are the 3 layers in an artery?
tunica interna (inner layer), tunica media - maintains elasticity and contractility (middle), and tunica externa (outer).
Many arteries anastomose. What does that mean?
that the distal ends of 2 or more vessels unite. An anatomosis between arteries provies alternate routes for blood to reach a tissue or organ
What is vasoconstriction?
decrease in the size of the lumen of a blood vessel
What is vasodilation?
increase in the size of the lumen of a blood vessel
Arteries play a key role in vasodilation and vasoconstriction. What does that mean?
regulates blood flow from arteries into capillaries and in altering arterial blood pressure
What is the function of capillaries?
connect arterioles and venules.
What are venules?
small vessels that are formed from the union of several capillaries; venules merge to form veins
What is the function of venules?
