- What are the 5 main types of blood vessels?
- arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules, and veins
- What is the main function of arteries?
- carry blood away from the heart
- What are the 3 layers in an artery?
- tunica interna (inner layer), tunica media - maintains elasticity and contractility (middle), and tunica externa (outer).
- Many arteries anastomose. What does that mean?
- that the distal ends of 2 or more vessels unite. An anatomosis between arteries provies alternate routes for blood to reach a tissue or organ
- What is vasoconstriction?
- decrease in the size of the lumen of a blood vessel
- What is vasodilation?
- increase in the size of the lumen of a blood vessel
- Arteries play a key role in vasodilation and vasoconstriction. What does that mean?
- regulates blood flow from arteries into capillaries and in altering arterial blood pressure
- What is the function of capillaries?
- connect arterioles and venules.
- What are venules?
- small vessels that are formed from the union of several capillaries; venules merge to form veins
- What is the function of venules?
- drain blood from capillaries into veins
