Cowper's gland
Also known as the bulbourethral glands; are located on either side of the urethra just below the prostate gland and their ducts open into the urethra. They secrete thick mucus acting as a lubricant.
Epididymis
Tube at the upper part of each testis where sperm is temporarily stored
Gamete
Sex cell
Penis
Male sex organ. The tip of the penis is a sensitive region called the glans penis. The prepuce, or foreskin, covers and protects the glans penis. The penis is composed of erectile tissue, which during sexual stimulation, fills with blood and caused an erection.
Prostate gland
Lies under the bladder and surrounds the upper end of the urethra in the region where the vas deferens enters the urethra. The prostate gland secretes a thick fluid that, as part of the semen, aids the mobility of the sperm.
Scrotum
External sac that encloses and supports the testes. It is suspended from the pubic arch behind the penis and lies between the thighs.
Semen
Ejaculatory fluid that contains sperm plus the secretions of the seminal vesicles, prostate gland and Cowper's glands.
Seminal vesicles
Glands located at the base of the urinary bladder, opening into the vas deferens as it joins the urethra. They secrete a thick, yellow substance that nourishes the sperm cells and forms much of the volume of ejaculated semen. The ejaculatory duct in the seminal vesicles passes through the prostate gland and enters the urethra.
Spermatozoa
Sperm are the male gametes. Sperm are manufactured by the seminiferous tubles within the testes.
Testes
The testicles are two small egg-shaped glands that produce the spermatozoa (sperm) and testosterone (male sex hormone). This is the male gonad where the gametes are produced.
Urethra
In the male, the urethra performs both a reproductive and urinary function. The urethra passes through the penis to the outside of the body.
Vas deferens
Carries the sperm up into the pelvic region, around the urinary bladder, and then down toward the urethra. At vasectomy, the vas deferens are ligated (tied), occluded (blocked) or fulgurated (sealed by electrical current).
