- Parallel Episodes
- repeated elements of the plot
- Tone
- the attitude a writer takes toward his or her subject, characters, and audience
- Bias
- prejudice in favor of or against something
- Homophone
- words that have the same pronunciation, but different spellings and meanings
- Mood
- the overall atmosphere or feeling of a work of literature
- Indirect Characterization
- descriptions of a character using indirect qualities (had a mysterious air about him)
- Motive
- the reasons a character acts a certain way
- Cause and Effect
- a text structure that that writers use to explain how or why one thing leads to another
- Proposition
- an important idea or position
- Exposition
- tells who the characters are and what their conflict is
- Context Clues
- words surrounding another word that help you understand the meaning of it
- Anecdote
- a brief story told to illustrate a point
- Falling Action
- the events that happen after the climax; leads up to the conclusion
- Setting
- the time and place of a story
- Motif
- a story that has no author and was originally passed down by word of mouth
- Subplot
- a minor plot that relates in some way to the main story
- Inciting Incident
- an incident that sets off the rising actions, which leads to the climax
- Direct Characterization
- descriptions of a character using direct qualities (short, stout, red)
- Author's Purpose
- the idea or point that the author wishes to make
