What is the main role of the editor

What is involved in the editors checklist
Lead- (all the information there should achieve the 5w's and H), Story Structure (organized in a logical manner), Completeness (all facts are given and no holes remain), Style (adherence to the AP style news organization's style), Names and Titles (accuracy), Quotes and attribution (direct and indirect used correctly), Triteness *remove cliches and words such as really, quite, basically, etc..)
Copy Editors
reading the copy of the reporters and correcting the language, grammar, spelling, and punctuation as needed
Design/ Layout editors

How must you craft a headline
-think what is the story about, what is happening in the story and what are the people doing? use action verbs and noun to help crafts the headline. Sum up the story in keywords, start with a first draft and never accept it that way without revising it. Think globally and include context- headline may be read by someone over the web, mobile device, across a variety of platforms around the world.
Headlines must be...
Accurate (cannot leave false impression to misguide the citizen), Logical (must make sense, cannot assume the reader will get it), Specificity (be detailed not general), Word Precision (use words exactly what they mean), Double Meanings (reconsider a headlines before publishing it to make sure it does not communicate another meaning)

3 times- 1st time to get a feel for the story, spot any problems that are identifiable, content and structure are reviewed. 2nd time-slower review of the story and editor is looking for accuracy, clarity, brevity. 3rd time- to catch any remaining discrepancies

they are abbreviated news story- and must communicate the story to attract the news citizen
