- sex cells
- specialized cells involed in reproduction; eggs are female sex cells and sperm are male sex cells.
- mitosis
- the process that results in two nuclei with the exact same information
- DNA
- an acid that chromosomes are made of that is found in the nuclei of almost all cells
- mutation
- a change in gene or chromosome
- asexual reproduction
- a type of reproduction in which an organism produces a new organism from one parent
- heredity
- the passing of traits from parent to offspring
- variation
- different ways a certain trait appears
- sexual reproduction
- a type of reproduction in which a new organism is produced from two parents whose DNA combines to produce the new individual with its own new DNA
- cloning
- creating an organism that has exactly the same DNA as another organism
- meiosis
- the process of sex cell formation during which the chromosome number in each sex cell becomes half the number found in other body cells
- gene
- a small section of a chromosome that determines a trait
- genetics
- the study of how traits are passed from parent to offspring.
- fertilization
- the process in which sperm and egg unite, resulting in a new individual with a full set of chromosomes
- embryo
- a fertilized egg that has begun dividing into more cells
