Artery
A blood vessel carrying oxygenated blood away from the heart towards the body
Lymphocyte
A type of white blood cell found in lymphnodes associated with the immune system
Collagen
A protein that is the main organic constituent of connective tissue
Nucleus
On oval organelle of a cell that contains the hereditary factors of the cell called genes.
Vein
Blood vessel that carries deoxygenated blood from the body back to the heart.
Erthrocyte
A red blood cell
Fascia
Fibrous membrane covering, supporting & separating muscles
Parietal
Pertaining to or forming the outter wall of a body cavity
Pericardium
A loose fitting membrane that encloses the heart for protection.
Hematology
Study of blood
Hemoglobin
A substance in red blood cells consisting of the protein globin, iron & the red pigment heme.
Bifurcate
Having two branches or divisions (Forked)
Trunk
The part of the body to which the upper & lower limbs are attached.
Secretion
A fluid that is produced & released from a gland
Capillary
A microscopic blood vessel located between an arteriole & venule through which materials are exchanged between blood & body cells
Ligament
Connective tissue that attaches bone to bone
Pelvis
The basen like structure formed by the two hip bones the sacrum & the coccyx
Blood
The fluid that circulates through the heart, arteries, capillaries & veins that is the chief means of transport in the body.
Nerve
A chord like bundle of nerve fibers found outside the central nervous system that carries impulses.
Dorsal body cavity
Cavity near the dorsal or posterior surface of the body that consists of the cranial cavity & vertebral canal
Muscle
An organ composed of one of the three types of muscle tissue (cardiac, skeletal or smooth) specialized for contractions to produce voluntary or involuntary movements of parts of the body.
Tendon
A white fibrous chord of dense connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone.
Osteology
Study of bones
Leukocyte
White blood cell
Four main tissues of the body
Muscle, Epithelial, Connective, Nervous
Insertion
Attachment of a muscle tendon to a moveable bone.
Arteriole
A small almost microscopic artery that delivers blood to a capillary
Visceral
Pertaining to the organs or the coverings of an organ
Adventitia
The outter most covering of a structure or organ
Abdomen
The area between the diaphram & the pelvis
Cartilage
Type of connective tissue consisting of collagen & elastic fibers
Abdominal Cavity
The superior portion of the abdominal pelvic cavity that contains the stomach, spleen, liver the gall bladder the pancreas the small intestines & most of the large intestines.
Abdominal pelvic cavity
The inferior component of the ventral body cavity that is subdivided into a superior abdominal cavity & an inferior pelvic cavity.
Fossa
Shallow depression
Cranial cavity
A subdivision of the dorsal body cavity formed by the cranium bones & containing the brain
Thoracic Cavity
The superior portion of the ventral body cavity that contains the heart & two lungs
Myocardium
The middle layer of the heart wall made of cardiac muscle tissue. Found between the endocardium & pericardium
Pulmonary
Concerning or effected by the lungs
Sulcus
A groove between parts found especially in the brain
Viscera
The organs inside the ventral body cavity
Bilateral
Pertaining to two sides of the body
Aorta
The main systemic trunk of the arterial system that emerges from the left ventricle.
Ventral body cavity
Anterior body cavity that's divided into a superior thoracic cavity & an inferior abdomino pelvic cavity.
Organ
A structure composed of two or more different kinds of tissue with a specific function and usually a recognizeable shape.
Body cavity
Space within the body that contains various internal organs
Fissure
A groove, fold or slit that maybe normal or abnormal
Membrane
A thin flexible sheet of tissue composed of connective tissue & epithelium
Venule
A vessel that carries blood from the capillary to a vein
Endocardium
Layer of the heart wall composed of endothelium & smooth muscle that lines the inside of the heart & covers valves & tendons
Zygote
The single cell resulting from the union of a male and female gamete (the furtilized ovum).
