- To turn on the computer and load the operating system.
- boot
- Any letter, number or symbol that can be displayed on the computer screen.
- Character
- The removal of a character or group of characters from a document.
- Delete text
- Any material that is created with an application program.
- Document
- Selecting an object that has been pointed to by pressing the mouse button twice in rapid succession.
- Double-Clicking
- Placing the pointer on an object, then depressing the mouse button while moving the object to a new location.
- Dragging
- Information created by an application that is stored on a disk.
- File
- Description of the shape of a set of characters such as Times or Helvetica.
- Font
- Line that is printed at the bottom of each page.
- Footer
- Line that is printed at the top of each page.
- Header
- Adding words or characters to a document.
- Insert text
- Group of items from which you may choose.
- List
- Program that the computer needs to run so it can accept application programs.
- Operating System -
- Line at the very top of the screen showing names of available menus.
- Menu bar
- A device used to position the I-beam in a word processing document.
- Mouse
- Dialog box displayed by the Open command which contains options for opening previously saved files.
- Open File dialog box
- Placing the mouse pointer on an object on the screen.
- Pointing
- Command on a File menu which prints the currently displayed file.
- Print command
- To leave an application program and return to the System.
- Quit
- Command on File menu used to exit an application.
- Quit command
- Key used to indicate the end of an entry. Pressing Return transfers the information entered from the keyboard into the computers memory
- Return key
- Line at the top of the work area showing placement of tabs, indents and margins.
- Ruler -
- Command on File menu used to transfer data from the computers memory (a document) to a file on disk.
- Save command
- Moving through a document, the screen acts as a window showing only part of the document.
- Screen scroll
- Used to move the screen window and are located below and on the right of the screen.
- Scroll bars
- Any character or group of characters in a document.
- Text
- Reverses the effect of the last command issued.
- Undo command
- A computer application program that allows text to be manipulated, stored and printed.
- Word processor
- When the computer decides whether to keep a word on the current line, or move it to the next line, based on the amount of space left on the line.
