- Established to keep Spain out of British colonies (buffer zone) and to provide English debtors with a way to make money

- Cecilius Calvert wanted to make money and he wanted a safe place for Catholics to live

- William Penn wanted to start a colony where Quakers could live safely

- separated from Massachusetts by the Btitish king because he thought the people in Massachusetts were too greeedy

- settled by Dutch traders who were taken over by British settlers, part of Pennsyvania for a time

- Split from South Carolina in 1712 by "squatters" (people who lived on the land but did not own it) who gre crops (especially tobacco) and those looking for religious freedom.

- settled by weallthy men who traded in sea port of Charlston (Charles town) used slaves to help grow cash crops (especially rice)
