Defense of Marriage Act

Reasons for American ambivalence toward marriage and family
divorce more acceptable, marriage competes with other opprotunities, less of a need to marry and stay married, shift from social role to social self.
social institution and examples
arrangement that helps to show how society works- a product of society, created to promote a function in society, contains rule or roles. Examples: government, education, religion.
what is the main public good that families produce? what public goods does it provide?
Children- social security- pay as you go, keep medicare costs down, take care of elderly.
What are the charataristics of a public family?
An adult or two that relate by marriage, partership, parenthood, or taking care of dependents. They are concerned with how they are taking care of public goods. Not concerned with gay couples and such that do not benefit us w/ public goods. may not live in the same household. society likes to regulate and make sure they're taking care of dependents by 1. sending kids to school 2. child labor laws 3. immunization. 5. parenting classes 6. financial assitance, child support
Prvate Family
two people with an intimate relationship and commitment, invested in private needs/pleasures in family (love,trust,sex,etc.). NOT open to public scrunity.
Methods for studying families
Surveys- census, random, cross-sectional survey, longitudinal study. field studies.

when hunter-gatheres switched to agriculture and established class and tribes- established out of a need for survival.
