- male gametes
- spermatozoa
- female gametes
- oocytes
- male primary sex organs
- gonads or testes
-
male secondary sex organs
three catagories
3,3,1 -
1. sperm-transporting ducts
epididymides, ductus deferentia, ejaculatory ducts
2. accessory glands
seminal vesicles, prostate and bulbourethral glands
3. copulatory organ - penis - male secondary sex characteristics
- physique, voice pitch, body hair
- perineum
- diamond shaped region between the symphysis pubis and the coccyx
- scrotum functions
- support and protect the testes, and to regulate their position relative to the pelvic region of the body.
- dartos
- layer of smooth muscle fibers in the subcutaneous tissue of the scrotum
- cremaster
- small band of skeletal muscle extending through the spermatic cord
- scrotal septum
- subdivides the scrotum into two compartments
- perineal raphe
- median longitudinal ridge extending forward to the undersurface of the penis and backward to the anal opening
- two tunics covering the testes
-
tunica vaginalis - outer
tunica albuginea - tough fibrous membrane directly covering each testis- inner - testicular lobules
- partitions in the testis formed by inward extensions of the tunica albuginea
- seminiferous tubules
- functional units of testes where spermatozoa are produced
- spermatogonia
- specialized germinal cells which undergo meiosis to eventually form sperm
- sustentacular cells
- produce and secrete nutrients for the developing spermatozoa
- interstitial cells
- produce and secrete male sex hormones
- rete testis
- tubular network where spermatozoa mature
- efferent ductules
- spermatozoa are transported out of the testis and into the epididymis through a series of these
- spermatozoon
- mature sperm cell
- 3 parts of a sperm cell and how many chromosomes
-
head, flagellum, acrosome(tip of head)
23 - epididymis
- contains sperm in their final stages of maturation. Releases them to ductus deferens
- ductus deferens
- conveys sperm from the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct
- path of ductus deferens
-
exits scrotum,
ascends along the posterior border of the testis,
penetrates the inguinal canal,
enters the pelvic cavity,
terminates at the ampulla where it joins the ejaculatory duct. - inguinal canal
- passageway for the spermatic cord through the abdominal wall
- ejaculatory duct
- formed by the union of the ampulla of the ductus deferens and the duct of the seminal vesicle. empties into the prostatic urethra
- seminal vesicles
- secrete substance that contributes to the motility and viability of the sperm
- prostate
- assists in sperm motility and protects sperm from acid environment of vagina
- bulbourethral glands
- During sexual arousal...secretes a mucoid substance that coats the lining of the urethra to neutralize the ph of urine residue. also lubricates tip of penis.
- urethra
- conmmon tube for both the urinary and reproductive systems in male
- 3 regions of urethra and function
-
prostatic part of the urethra -
receives drainage from the small ducts of the prostate and two ejaculatory ducts
membranous part of the urethra -
external urethral sphincter located in this region - passes through urogenital diaphragm
spongy part of the urethra - extends from urogenital diaphragm to end of penis. bulbourethral glands attach to spongy part - urethral glands
- secrete mucous into lumen of urethra
- penis
- copulatory organ on the male reproductive system
- spermatic cord
- extends from the testis to the inguinal canal and consists of the ductus deferens, testicular artery and venous plexis, nerves, cremaster muscle, lymph vessels and connective tissue
