- the shape made with a two-band stretcher
- parallel
- two lines that are in the same plane that will never meet or intersect
- parallelogram
-
a closed, four-sided figure with opposite sides parallel - square root
- 3 is an example of this when comparing it to 9
- ratio
- comparison of two similar things (quantities) that tells the scale between them-- usually written as a fraction (one number divided by another number)
- complementary angles
-
pairs of angles whose measures add up to 90 degrees - corresponding angles
-
angles of two different figures that are in the same, relative position - scale factor
- a number used to multiply the sides of a figure to stretch or shrink it
- corresponding sides
-
sides of two different figures that are in the same, relative position - angle measure or the unit of measure for an angle
- An angle is measured with the unit called a degree. A 'right angle' is a total of 90 degrees.
- equivalent ratios
- ratios written as fractions that have the same value; e.g. 1/2 is a ratio and 2/4 is a ratio; and these two ratios are equal or 'equivalent'.
- congruent
-
When shapes are identical, we call these shapes 'congruent' - coordinate
-
a pair of numbers that work together to form a point. e.g., (2,4) is a point on a coordinate graph - midpoint
-
a center point on a line - a rep-tile
-
tiles put together to form a larger, SIMILAR figure - probability
- PROBABILITY is the chance that something will occur. QUESTION: What is the chance that a coin will fall on the 'heads' side: ANSWER: 1 chance out of two or 50%
- perimeter
-
the distance around a polygon - quadrilateral
-
a closed four-sided figure - supplementary angles
-
two angles whose measures add up to 180 degrees - a dimension
- the length and width of a polygon is called DIMENSION
- to square a number
- multiplying a number times itself gives you that number's SQUARE
- similar shapes
- shapes that have a scale factor, and the same angles and the same shape
- a tessellation
-
a pattern that is repeated to completely cove all spaces in a flat surface - a transformation
- something that has been changed
