Dorsal Recumbent/Supine
-Back-lying with knees flexed, head slightly elevated
-To facilitate healing following certain surgeries or anesthetics
Lithotomy
Back-lying with feet supported in stir-ups
Genupectoral
Kneeling position with torso at a 90 degree angle to hips
Sims
Side-lying with lower most arm behind the body and uppermost leg flexed at hip and knee
Prone
Lies on abdomen with head turned to the side (this position allows full extension of hip and knee joints),
-Good for unconscious clients or those recovering from surgery of the throat or mouth because it promotes drainage from the mouth
-it helps to prevent flexion contractures of the hips and knees,
Fowler's Position
A semisitting position in which the head and trunk are raised 45-90 degrees
-Good for clients that have difficulty breathing and for some with heart problems
Semi/Low-Fowler's Position
The head is raised 15-45 degrees
High-Fowlers position
The head is raised 90 degrees (in this position the knees may not be flexed)
Orthopenic
An adaption of high-Fowler's; the client sits with an overbed table across the lap, the client rests head and hands on pillows on overbed table (this position facilitates respiration by allowing max chest expansion)
Lateral
-Side-lying with the top hip and knee flexed and placed in front of the body to create stability
-For clients who are confined to bed in the fowler's position or sit a lot throughout the day, it reduces lordosis and promotes back alignment
Pressure Points: Supine
Heels(calcaneus), Sacrum, Elbows (olecranon process), Scapulae, Back of head (occipital bone)
Pressure Points: Lateral
Malleolus (medial and lateral), knee (medial and condyles), Greater trochanter, Ilium, Shoulder (acromial process), Ear, Side of head (parietal and temporal bones)
Pressure Points: Prone
Toes (phalanges), Knees (patellas), Genitalia (men), Breasts (women), Shoulder (acromial process), Cheeck and ear (zygomatic bone)
Pressure Points: Fowler's position
Heels (calcaneus), Pelvis (ischial tuberosity), Sacrum, Vertbrae (spinal processe)
