ORGANIC MATTER
Naturally occurring plant and animal resources. Organic matter is a part of compost.
TEXTURE
The coarseness or fineness of the soil.
PEAT
Partially decayed plant matter formed on the surface of water-logged soils.
LOAM
A gardening term that means you have good soil. It is usually soil that has the right amounts of sand, silt and clay to make it a good home for roots.
SILT

This is the medium-sized soil particle. It is between sand and clay in size.
SAND

The largest of the soil particles. It is huge when it is compared to clay.
SOIL

The outer covering of the earth where plants grow. Soil is made up of minerals (sand, silt, clay), air, water, and organic matter.
HUMUS

Decayed plant and animal matter that makes up good soil.
VERMICULITE

Another part of soil mixes. This material is lightweight, tan in colour, and can hold water.
CLAY
Very, very, very fine soil particles.
CASTINGS
Worm poop.
COMPOST
A mixture of plant parts (leaves, stems, flowers) and soil that has been piled up, soaked with water, and allowed to rot.
