- Explain how plants can grow.
- They grow from the tips of stems, roots, and branches. They also get bigger in circumference.
- What is Chlorophyll?
-
a green coloring in the chloroplasts that traps the light from the sun
- What is a major source of the water vapor in the air?
- transpiration
- What are some characteristics of plants?
-
*are producers
*make food
*are usually green
*contain chlorophyll
*usually don't move around - What is the function(job) of the stem?
- support the above ground parts...allow the movement of material between the roots and leaves...some store food...i.e. potatoes, sugar cane
- What is the function(job) of a root?
- water and minerals enter through them...anchor the plant into the soil...some are food sources...i.e. carrots and beeets
- What are Woody Stems?
- Hard and rigid stems ie.- maple trees, pine trees.
- What is a Cuticle?
- A waxy coating covering the epidermis, protects the plant from drving out.
- Name and describe the stem parts--Vascular tissue.
-
a. Xylem: tube-like vessels that transport water and minerals up from the roots through the stem to the leaves...is dead..."what we call wood"
b. Phloem- made of tube-like vessels that move food and water from the leaves to other parts of the plants...is alive. - Name and describe the types of roots.
-
A. Fibrous...branched and spreading...can go very deep...i.e. African Violet
B. Tap Roots...thick...store food...i.e.carrots -
What are chloroplasts?
- the part of the cell where photosynthesis thakes place.
- What is respiration and where does it occur?
- the process in which foods are broken down and energy is released...this occurs in the mitochondria.
- What are plant leaves?
- the organs for trapping sunlight and making food
- What is photosynthesis?
- the process in which plants use light to produce food...it changes water and carbon dioxide into sugar(glucose) and oxygen.
- What are Palisade layers?
- Where most of the food is made - long cells, below the upper eprermis.
- What are Spongy layers?
- It contains many air spaces and xylem and phloem (veins), loosly packed cells.
- What does the Xylem do and where is it located?
- carries water and mineral from the roots through the plant ...in veins of spungy layer
- What are Herbaceous Stems?
- Hard and rigid stems ie.- maple trees, pine trees.
- What is the Palisade layer?
- where most of the food is made...long cells below the upper epidermis
- Define Stomate(stomata):
- openings in the epidermis
- What is transpiration and when does it usually occur?
- the loss of water vapor through the stomata of a leaf....mostly during the day.
- What are Anual Rings?
- circular pattern inside a tree that reparesents one year of growth, made of xylem, also give clues to weather conditions.
- What are the parts of a plant?
- roots, stems, leaves
- What is the Epidermis and where is it found?
- Thin outer layer on top and bottom that protects the leaf.
