Portugal - Explorer who wanted to find a way around Africa - shortcut to Asia.
Christopher Columbus
Sailed for Spain - thought he found Asia by sailing west but really found the New World
Ferdinand Magellan
Sailed for Spain - his crew circumnavigated. He was killed in a battle before this happened.
imperialism
when one country controls the government and economy of another country or territory. European countries took over many colonies along the coast of Africa and North and South America
Scientific Revolultion
European looked at the world differently due to scientific discoveries in the 16th and 17th centuries. telescopes, microscopes, classification system for all living things on Earth

change in the way goods were produced because machines were performing jobs once done by humans

when businesses that make and sell goods are privately owned. They make their own decisions about what to make and how much to charge - they try to make money.
French Revolution
When French citizens demanded changes in the government. The even stormed a prison which was run by the royal family.
Reign or Terror
once revolutionary leaders killed the king, they didnt tolerate any dissagreement and killed many people.
Napoleon Bonaparte
General who took control of France. Ended the French Revolution and the killing.

emperor - in Russia. First one was a 16 yhear old named Ivan IV or Ivan the Terrible
Ivan the Terrible
emperor, or czar of Russia known for his cruelty toward enemies. Led the country in wars constantly.
Peter the Great
ruled Russia. intelligebnt man with big ideas. Wanted to have ties with Europe. Made Russia stronger but didn't improve life for peasants
Catherine the Great
ruled Russia and added many new lands to the empire. borrowed ideas from Europe. Still didn't help peasants
Russian Revolution
the overturning of the Russian monarchy - the poor people forced Nicholas, the ruler of Russia, to give up power. The rulers were killed.
