EC Vocab
MYSP's Environmental Chemistry vocab for the upcoming final!! Keep in mind that what I chose to put on my flashcards is most likely different than what you chose:mrgreen:! Oh, and I also didn't include parts of the definition because some of it was an example. 'Such as' makes the definition too long to remember:wink:. Lastly, please pretend that the full-size numbers by the gases in Acid Rain and the conversions are sub numbers!

- Greenhouse Gases
- Atmospheric substances that effectively absorb infared radiation.
- Base Units
- Metric unit that expresses a fundamental physical quantity.
- Boyles Law
- P1/T1 = P2/T2
- Frequency
- Number of waves that pass a given point each second; rate of oscillation.
- Acid Rain
- Fog, sleet, snow, or rain with a pH lower than about 5.6 due to dissolve gases such as SO2, SO3, and NO2.
- Charles Law
- V1/T1 = V2/T2
- Chlorofluorocarbons
- Synthetic substances previously used as aerosol propellants, cooling fluids, and cleaning solvents that lead to ozone destruction through production of chlorine radicals.
- Photons
- Energy bundles of electromagnetic radiation that travels at the speed of light.
- C → K Conversion
- Tc + 273 = Tk
- Carbon Cycle
- Movement of C atoms within Earth's ecosystems from carbon storage as plant and animal matter, through release as carbon dioxide due to cellular respiration, combustion, and decay, to reacquisition by plants.
- Smog
- Potentially hazardous combination of smoke and fog.
- Particulates
- Solid particles that enter the air through human activities or natural processes.
- F → C Conversion
- (Tf - 32) / 1.8 = Tc
- Ideal Gas
- Gas that behaves under all conditions as predicted by kinetic molecular theory.
- STP
- Standard Temperature and Pressure; one atmosphere and 25 degrees Celsius.
- pH Scale
- A measure of the acidic or basic character of a solution.
- Electromagnetic Radiation
- Radiation ranging from low-energy radio waves to high-energy X-rays and gamma rays; includes visible light.
- Barometer
- Device that measures atmospheric pressure.
- Greenhouse Effect
- Trapping and returning of infared radiation to Earth's surface by atmospheric substances such as water and carbon dioxide.
- Nuclear Fission
- Splitting an atom into 2 smaller atoms.
- Derived Units
- Metric unit formed by mathematically combining 2 or more base units.
- Synthetic Substances
- Substances produced solely as the result of humans; entirely human-made.
- Avogadro's Law
- 1 mol = 22.4 L
- Electromagnetic Spectrum
- Waves comprising the full range of electromagnetic radiation frequencies.
- Wavelength
- Distance between the corresponding parts of successive waves.
- Molar Volume
- Volume occupied by one mole of a substance.
