- Dependent Variable
- the second variable; affected or predicted by the independent variable; the consequence
- syllogism
- deductive reasoning, containing a major and minor premise
- Criterion Variable
- variable about which prediction is made in correlational research
- Population Generalizability
- the extent to which the results obtained from a sample are generalizable to a larger group
- Internal Validity
- the degree to which observed differences on the dependent variable are directly related to the independent variable, not to some other uncontrolled variable
- Extraneous Variable
- A source of error that has negative impact on the results of the study; often unknown or not controlled by researcher; impacts the dependent variable
- Ethnographic
- appropriate for behaviors best understood by observing them within their natural settings; key details- in depth interviewing, highly detailed, ongoing participant observation
- Survey
- collection of information from a sample by asking questions
- Quantitative Research
- investigator attempts to clarify phenomena through carefully designed and controlled data collection and analysis; dealing with numbers
- scientific method
- putting "guesses" through a rigorous test to see if they hold up under more controlled conditions
- True Experimental
- directly attempts to influence a particular variable; tests cause & effect relationships; researchers manipulate independent variable; random assignment of assignments to treatment groups
- External Validity
- the degree to which the results are generalizable or applicable to groups and environments outside the research setting
- Single Subject
- involves extensive data collection on one subject at a time
- Correlational
- Seeks out associations among variables; helps explain important human behaviors or predicts likely outcomes
- Historical
- focuses on the past exclusively
- Casual Comparative
- seeks to identify relationships; attempts to determine causes or consequences of differences that already exist between or among groups; three types: exploration of effects, exploration of causes, exploration of consequences
- Qualitative Research
- investigator attempts to study normally occurring phenomena in all their complexity; dealing with information
- Independent Variable
- the first variable; it influences or predicts; it is the antecedent; what you manipulate, a treatment, or cause or program
- Ecological Generalizability
- the degree to which results can be generalized to environments and conditions outside the research setting
- Predictor Variable
- variable used to make prediction in correlational research
- Quasi Experimental
- Do not include the use of random assignment; types include matching only, counterbalanced, time series, factorial
- 5 Steps of scientific method
- The problem, precise definition of problem, determine what information would solve problem, determine how to organize the info, interpret the collected and analyzed info
- Confounding Variable
- varies systematically with independent variable
