- Pubertal maturation
- Process through which the primary sexual characteristics develop into adult form and the secondary sexual characteristics associated with puberty emerge and develop.
- Puberty
- period during which the primary sexual characteristics develop into adult form and the secondary sexual characteristics are emerging and developing and the capability to reproduce is attained.
- Prepubescent phase
- Stage in pubertal maturation during which some of the bodily changes associated with adolescence (changes in height, weight, fat and muscle distribution, glandular secretions, or sexual characteristics) have begun.
- Pubescent phase
- Stage in pubertal maturation during which most of the bodily changes associatd with adolescence have been initiated.
- Postpubescent phase
- Stage in pubertal maturation during which the bodily changes asociated with adolescence are completed.
- Endocrine glands
- Ductless glands, such as the pituitary gland, that secrete their content into the bloodstream.
- Hormones
- Chemicals relese into the bloodstream that have specific regulatory effects on the activity of certain organs.
- Exocrine glands
- Glands with an opening (duct), such as salivary and mammary glands, that secrete their content directly into the environment.
- Steroids
- Sex hormones (androgens in male and estrogen in females) tha control development of physical and physiological changes associated with pubertal maturation.
- Estrogens
- Female sex hormones associated with the development of secondary sexual characteristics in girls.
- Androgens
- Male sex hormones associated with the development of secondary sexual characteristics in boys.
- Primary sexual characteristics
- Physical attributes present at birth that involve internal and external genitalia.
- Secondary sexual characteristics
- Physical attributes that develop during puberty. ex. breasts in girls, and facial hair in males

- Adolescents who attain the physical maturation characteristics of puberty earlier than the rest of their same-age peers.
- Late maturers
- Adolescents who attain the physical maturation characteristics of puberty later than most of their same age peers.
- Menarche
- Beginning of the first menstrual cycle.

- Resiliency
- Presence of considerable physical and physiological ability to overcome adversities.
- Delayed puberty
- Being behind schedule, for a given age group, in reaching puberty.

- Eating disorder characterized by low body weight due to a person's misperception of his or her body image and by the mistaken belief that he or she is overweight.

- Eating disorder characterized by self-induced binge eating and purging behavior.

- difficult or painful menstruation.

- Adolescents who attain the physical maturation characteristics of puberty at the same time as most of theiry same age peers.
