- accidental sampling
- a nonrandom sampling method whereby the researcher includes the most convenient cases in his or her sample
- alpha
- probability of committing a type I error
- analysis of variance
- a statistical test that makes a single overall decision as to whether a significant difference is present among three or more sample means
- central tendency
- what is average or typical of a set of data, a value generally located toward the middle or center of a distribution
- bimodal distribution
- a frequency distribution containing two or more modes
- chi-square
- a nonparametric test of significance whereby expected frequencies are compared against observed frequencies
- class interval
- a category in a group distribution containing more than one score value
- class limit
- the point midway between adjacent class intervals that serves to close the gap beatween them
- coefficient of determination
- equal to the Pearson's correlation squared, the proportion of variance in the dependent variable that is explained by the independent variable
- coefficient of nondeterminatin
- equal to one minus the Pearson's correlation squared, the proportion of variance in the dependent variable that is not explained by the independent variable
- columnn percent
- in a cross-tabulation, the result of dividing a cell frequency by the n;umber of cases in a column. column percents add up to 100% for each column of a cross tabulation
- confidence interval
- the range of mean values (proportions) within which the true population mean is likely to fall
- contingency coefficient
- based on chi-squrae, a measure of the degree of association of rnominal data arranged in a table larger than 2 by 2
- correlation
- strength and direction between two variables
- correlation coefficient
- generally ranging between -1.00 and +1.00, a number in which both the strength and direction of correlation are expressed
- cross-tabulation
- the total number of cases having any given score or a score that is lower
- curvilinear correlation
- a relationship between x and y that begins as either positive or negative and then reverses direction
