- 1st person
- The narrator of a composition uses the word I for themselves. The story is narrated by 1 character
- Foil
- A character that serves, by contrast, to highlight opposing traits in another character. ex. Draco is a foil to Harry Potter
- Chronological Order
- The order which events happen in time.
- 3rd person
- The voice of the narrator is the author his/herself.
- Exaggeration
- Another statement to enlarge beyond the bounds of truth. ex. "Max is as strong as an ox."
- Main Idea
- The overall message of the author, usually just in non-fiction.
- Jargon
- Potentially confusing words and phrases used in an occupation, trade, or field of study. ex. Touchdown
- Folklore
- Sayings and verbal compositions passed along by word of mouth. Includes superstition, spells, nursery rhymes, and other traditions.
- Inference
- Coming to a judgement that something is true because of a previously considered truth.
- Stereotype
- A character who is so ordinary or unoriginal that the character seems like an oversimplified representation of a type, gender, or occupation
