- What is MMT
- Manual Muscle Testing: It is a way to measure maximal contraction of MS or MS group
- Methods of Evaluating MS strength
-
1-test individual MS as much as possible
2-Assess strength of MS groups
3-Observe while ADLs/activities are performed - What are the 6 Purposes of MMT
-
1-MS power avail and to establish a baseline
2-To determine how MS weakness is affecting ADL performance
3-Prevent deformities from imbalanced strength
4-Determine need for AD to compensate for reduced strength
5-Will aid in the selection of activities w/in pt's capabilities
6-Evaluate the effectiveness of TX (eval strength to see if the TX is approp for that strength level. - What is the relationship between MMT and ROM
- It is the measurement of the MS strength to move the joint thru ROM. Did the MS move the joint thru complete, partial or no ROM?
- What are the 4 MMT Limitations
-
1-Endurance
2-Coordination
3-Motor performance (can't tell if one particular MS is doing the job)
4-Upper Motor Neuron Deficit (CNS problems inhibit a true MS strength measurement) - What factors influence MS function
-
1- gravity. Grades 0,1,2,3 test in horizontal (transverse)plane; 4,5 grade test in vertical (saggital)plane
2- substitution: eliminate it by correct positioning, stabilization, & palpation - What are the 6 Standard procedures for performing MMT
-
1-Positioning
2-Stabilizing
3-palpation
4-observing
5-resisting
6-grade the result - what are the MS grades
-
0 = Zero
1 = Trace
2- = Poor-
2 = Poor
2+ = Poor+
3- = Fair -
3 = Fair
3+ = Fair+
4 = Good
5 = Normal - Define 0, and 1 MS grades
-
0 (zero/none): is NO MS CONTRACTION
1 (trace): CONTRACTION CAN BE FELT (very little)BUT NO JOINT MOTION - Define 2-, 2, & 2+ MS GRADES
-
2- (Poor-): Move thru INCOMPLETE ROM, Gravity Decreased
2 (Poor): Move thru COMPLETE ROM, Gravity Decreased
2+ (Poor+):Move thru INCOMPLETE (< 50%) ROM against GRAVITY, OR, move thru COMPLETE ROM w/DECREASED GRAVITY, but against SLIGHT RESISTANCE. - Define 3-, 3, 3+ MS GRADES
-
3- (FAIR -): Move thru INCOMPLETE ( > 50%) ROM against GRAVITY
3 (Fair): Move thru COMPLETE ROM against GRAVITY
3+ (Fair+): Move thru COMPLETE ROM against Gravity and SLIGHT RESISTANCE - Define 4 & 5 MS GRADES
-
4 (Good): Move thru COMPLETE ROM with Moderate Resistance
5 (Normal): Move thru COMPLETE ROM with Full Resistance -
