- sectionalism
- the belief by the people in a given region or area that their ideas and interests are better and more important than those of another region or area
- confederate states of america
- the name given to the government formed by the southern states that seceded from the union in the early 1860's
- driver
- an older slavethat a plantation owner thought was loyal and who supervised other slaves.
- slave code
- laws enacted in the south that took away nearly all the rights of slaves by regulating their actions.

- legislation passed by congress by which CA centered the union as a free state, slave trading was ended in the District of Columbia, TX gave up its claims to NM in exchange for money, residents of the territories of NM and UT would be able to dtermine whter they wanted slavery, and stronger fugitive slave act was enacted
