- What is the purpose of the Constitution?
- to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general warfare
- judicial review
- a law that increased the number of federal judges, allowing president John Adams to fill most of the new spots with federalists
- limited government
- the principle that requires all US citizens, including government leaders, to obey the law
- What sre the requirements to hold each office?
- president - minimum age 35, reidency - 14 years in the US, citizenship - natural-born / senator - minimum age30, residency - state elected, citizenship - 9 years
- veto
- an order prohibiting some proposed or intended act
- individual rights
- a personal liberty and privilege guaranteed to US citizens by the Bill of Rights
- checks and balances
- the ability of each branch of government to exercise checks or controls, over the other branches
- republicanism
- the belief that government should be based on the consent of the people; people exercise their power by voting for political representatives
- Which powers shared by the national and state governments?
- collect taxes, establish courts, make & enforce laws, and spend money for the general welfare
- impeachment
- the process of accusing a public official of wrongdoing
- What is treason and how is it punished?
- levying war against us, or adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort / the congress shall have the power to declare the punishment
- By what process can the constitution be amended?
- 2/3 have to propose, then 3/4 has to approve it
- veto override
- when a veto is overriden by majority {2/3} vote of congress
- Executive powers
- president- appoints federal judges, can grant reprieves and pardons for fereal crimes, can veto acts of congress, can call special sessions of congress
- Who is president of the Senate but has no vote unless the Senate is equally divided?
- vice-president
- Legislative powers
- congress- can override veto, controls spending of money, establishes lower federal court, can impeach and remove federal judges
- separation of powers
- the division of basic government roles into branches
- Judicial powers
- supreme court- can declare executive acts unconstitutional, can declare acts of congress uncostitutional
- popular sovereignty
- a govern ment in which the people rule; a system in which the residents vote to decide an issue

- all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States
