- development
- physical, intellectual, and social changes in children that occur as a result of experience
- curriculum
- the knowledge and skills that teachers teach and students are supposed to learn
- social institution
- an organization with established structures and rules designed to promote certain goals
- personal teaching efficacy
- a teacher's belief in his or her ability to promote learning in all students regardless of their prior knowledge or experiences
- looping
- the practice of keeping a teacher with one group of students for more than one year
- middle schools
- schools, typically for grades 6-8, specifically designed to help students through the rapid social, emotional, and intellectual changes characteristic of early adolescence
- comprehensive high school
- a secondary school that attempts to meet the needs of all students by housing them together and providing curricular options geared toward a variety of student ability levels and interests
- principal
- the individual who has the ultimate administrative responsibility for the school's operation
- career technical
- a term used to identify programs designed to provide students with education and job skills that will enable them to get a job immediately after graduating from high school

- programs that accommodate differences in children's development by allowing them to acquire skills and abilities at their own pace through direct experiences

- individuals responsible for the day-to-day operation of a school

- the belief by teachers that their school can make a difference in students' lives
- early childhood education
- a general term encompassing a range of educational programs for young children, including infant intervention and enrichment programs, nursery schools, public and private prekindergartens and kindergartens, and federally funded Head Start programs
- advanced placement classes
- courses taken in high school that allow students to earn college credit
- school district
- an administrative unit within a state, defined by geographical boundaries, and legally responsible for the public education of children within those boundaries

- a school in which learning for all students is maximized
