- The widest point on the facial and lingual contours of the tooth
- Porous
- An object with minute opening that allow the passage of gas or fluid
- Cervical Area
- Portion of the tooth below the height of contour and at, or slightly below, the cementoenamel junction
- Stabilizing Cord
- Disposable latex cord that is an alternative to the conventional clamp method used to secured the dental dam
- Dental Dam Punch
- Used to create the holes in the dental dam needed to expose the teeth to be isolated
- Beveled
- Characterized by an angle of a surface that meets another angle
- Cotton Roll Isolation
- Use of tightly formed absorbent cotton that is preshaped to be positioned close to the salivary gland ducts to absorb the flow of saliva, and close to the working field to absorb excess water
- Titration
- The process of determining the exact amount of a drug or substance that would be used to achieve a desired level of sedation
- Oximetry
- Measurement of oxygen concentration in the blood
- Septum
- Dental dam material located between the holes of the punched dam
- Vasoconstrictor
- Type of drug that constricts (narrows) blood vessels; used to prolong anesthetic action
- U-Shaped Frame
- Plastic frame placed under the dam; radiolucent so it is not necessary to remove when exposing radiographs
- Dental Dam Forceps
- Used for placement and removal of the dental dam clamp
- Aspirate
- To draw back or to draw within
- Permeate
- To spread or flow throughout
- Titrate
- To determine the concentration of a substance
- Diffuse
- To spread from an area of high concentration to one of low concentration
- Young Frame
- Stainless steel U-shaped holder with sharp projections on outer margin; placed on the outside of the dam
- Dental Dam Stamp
- Used to mark the dental dam with predetermined markings for average adult and pediatric arches
- Ostby Frame
- Round plastic frame with sharp projections on its outer margin; placed on outer margin
- Systemic Toxicity
- Relating to a system, or typically the entire body
- Saliva Ejector
- A small straw shaped oral evacuator; main function is to remove liquids from the mouth
- Bow
- Rounded part of the clamp that extends through the dental dam
- Ligature
- Dental floss or tape attached to the bow of the dental dam clamp before it is placed in the patients mouth
- Malaligned
- Displaced out of line, especially teeth displaced from normal relation to the line of the dental arch: also called malposed
- Universal
- Pertaining to the same clamp that can be placed on the same type of tooth in the opposite quadrant
- Jaws
- Part of the clamp that is shaped into four prongs to help stabilize the clamp on the tooth
- Scavenger System
- Reduces the amount of N2O that escapes into the atmosphere
- Multiple Tooth Isolation
- Exposure of three or more teeth
- Gauge
- Standard dimension or measurement of the thickness of an injection needle
- Paresthesia
- Condition in which numbness lasts after the effects of local anesthetic solutions should have worn off
- Anesthesia
- Temporary loss of feeling or sensation
- Exposed
- Pertaining to selected teeth visible through the dental dam
- High Volume Evacuator
- Used to remove saliva, blood, water, and debris during a dental procedure
- Dental Dam Frame
- Holder used to stabilize and stretch the dental dam, so it fits tightly around the teeth
- Single Tooth Isolation
- Typically used for selected restorative procedures and Endodontics treatment
- Dry-Angle Isolation
- Absorbent pad placed on the buccal mucosa over Stenson's Duct to block the flow of saliva, protect the tissues, and aid in retraction
- Winged Clamp
- Type of dental clamp that has extensions to help retain the dental dam
- Stylus
- Sharp, pointed tool used for cutting
- Dental Dam Material
- Made of latex or latex-free material; thin stretchable material used as a barrier for isolation
- Oral Evacuation
- Describes the process of removing excess fluid and debris from the mouth
- Lumen
- The hollow center of the injection needle
- Anesthetic
- Medication that produces the temporary loss of feeling or sensation
- Tidal Volume
- Amount of air inhaled and exhaled with each breath
- Induction
- Time from injection to effective anesthesia
- Analgesia
- Stage of anesthesia in which the patient is relaxed and conscious
