Was a cause of embarrassment for the Lin family. The Lin family had never eaten it uncooked before and did not know how to react when offered it. So they did what they thought was right, peel the strings off the stalk, and made some embarrassing noises. Causing everyone to stare at them. (MO)
Why does Johnny not know anything about his father's fiancé, and why does his father not work.
Johnny's father doesn't work, not because he's lazy but because he chose to watch over his 5 children. This actually makes more economic sense and was a better move for his family. Johnny mistakenly makes it seem as though his dad is a bum. It also seems like the family is in need of money, which is why Johnny works, but not terrible need, Johnny spends his wages on a coat and shoes rather than food. It also seems like Johnny father married a woman who has money, and for this reason they move to LA, where they will have a better lifestyle hopefully.
Why did the girl say to Mrs. Crosman "I wish you were my mom" and why does she, in the end, throw away the white umbrella?
The girl said that she wished Mrs. Crosman was her mom because deep inide, even though she wasn't admitting it, she was disappointed with her mom, and she actually thought her mom might not be coming. The only thing she wanted at the time was the white umbrella because she wanted to be like Eugenie, popular and "developed". At the time she was being very materialistic; when she finally realized she loved her mom and that everything her mom was doing was for her, she threw the umbrella away as a sign of maturity and understanding and that she chose love over things.

Why does the protagonist drink black coffee in the end of "Standing Woman", what does the black coffee represent?
The Protagonist drinks the black coffee, instead of with cream and sugar, like he usually does because he is accepting his wife being planted. He wants to taste the bitterness of the coffee, just like the bitterness of the situation. The protagonist does not want to sugar coat his life. (MO)

The protagonist of "The White Umbrella" admired her but made the mistake of saying she wanted her for a mom.She represents the girl's uncertainty. (DW)

What makes Fausto want to give all the money the nice couple gave him to the church, and why does he feel better after?
Fausto was tormented by his conscience for taking the twenty dollars from the nice couple. Fausto lied to the couple about where he found the dog, they showered him with thanks, and that made him feel horrible. The first place he thought of to clear his conscience was the church. So at church, Fausto puts the whole twenty into the church collection. After Church, he felt much better, the money was going to a better cause, and his conscience was cleared.(MO)

In "Standing Woman's" society it is illegal for a group of authors to come together because it is considered illegal assembly. The government would arrest and plant the authors for causing a disturbance or revolt against government. The protagonist has no courage to visit the old author as he hasn't the courage to quit writing in a protected society.(MO)

Another representative of fitting. The father takes the family to the restaurant as a celebration for his job raise and that they are making it in America. This causes a very embarrassing "bad manners" moment.(MO)

A car that is a dream car. The protagonist lied to her piano teacher that she had one, so her teacher would not feel bad for her about being wet.(NL)

In "The No-Guitar Blues" Fausto's conscience is driving him crazy with guilt for lying to the nice couple about where he found their dog. The nice couple gave him a $20 dollar bill and he felt horrible for lying, so he gave all the money to the ____, and felt much better. (MO)

A pastry filled with meat, veggies, or fruit usually baked or fired. Fausto does not understand what the nice woman offered him—shows the class and culture difference. Also shows kindness and what causes Fausto's conscience to make him crazy for lying about where he found the nice couple's dog. (MO)

Why does the government plant people in "Standing Woman" and why do people do things to get themselves planted?
The government plants people as a way of keeping order and having a perfect society. The people who get planted sometimes don't mean to sometimes, in the case of the postman. But in the case of the author's wife and the professor and students, they don't care about the consequences and they speak out their mind despite what might happen to them.

One who writes as an occupation. The Protagonist is one, he can neither write doing good or harm. He is embarrassed that he still writes in a society where you cannot write what you want. What evidence does the author in "Standing Women" give that shows us that it is a different city than most cities?
In "Standing Woman" the city does not allow writing that does good or harm. In SW the government also plants people who cause problems. When they plant the people they can not talk to them or say their name. The protagonist is invited to a retired author's house, but does not go for fear of breaking the law of illegal assembly. The author visits his wife, who is planted, in fear of being seen and planted. He goes for coffee and hears people whispering about a professor and his students who protested and were planted. They stop whispering because the government may arrest them. "Standing Woman's" society is a society of fear and control. Government plants out speakers, pets, and strays, showing authority and causing fear.(NL)

What are the cultural differences in "The All American Slurp" when the Lin's eat with the Gleason's and when the Gleason's eat with the Lin's?
When the Lin's ate with the Gleason's the Lin's were accustom to Chinese ways of eating rather than American ways. So when Mrs. Gleason offered some celery the Lin's were accustom to pulling the strings off, but they soon found out that it is not how the Americans did it. Also when it came time for dinner the Lin's brought chairs to it buffet thinking that it is where they were going to eat, they soon find out that it was wrong. Then when the Gleason's come to eat at the Lin's, it was just the opposite. The Lin's mostly had Chinese people over and when the Gleason's started mixing their food all together the Lin's stared at them. (NL)
Why does the protagonist in "White Umbrella" lie about the Umbrella?
The reason that she lied about her mom giving her the umbrella is that she wanted to seem like she had plenty of money. She wanted her piano teacher to think that she was just like all the other kids in her neighborhood and not feel bad for her. She lies to her mother about having it under her skirt, because she is embarrassed for telling the piano teacher that she was better then her mother.(NL)
