Diderot
Creator of the Encyclopedia to "change the general way of thinking" which included thousands of articles by many scientists, workers, priests and writers to show every aspect of other ways of thinking.
Scientific Revolution
A world-view of "precise knowledge of the pysical world based on the union of experimental observations with sophisticated mathematics" in the 17th century.
Newton
Creator of the law of universal gravitation, where every universe attracts every other universe in a mathematical relatoinship.
Galileo
Creator of many inventions, his most important aspect to the scientific revolution was that the Pope did not want him to publish his Copernican theories in his books, so the people would follow the beliefs of the Catholic church. He did not, however, follow this, and was put under house arrest.
Montesquieu
Had a comparative study of republics, monarchies, and depotisms and how it benefits or does not benefit where people live now.
Enlightenment ("Age of Reason")
When people started questioning religion and started using science to prove past and new things to be either incorrect or true.
Bentham
Said that problems should be solved based on science and logic.
Philosophes
Philosophers asking many questions about God, life, human nature, etc.
Rousseau
Creator of The Social Contract, he believed in individual freedom and said that rationalism and civilization were destroying.
Descartes
Stated that anything with any doubt is not true.
Copernicus
Creator of the Copernican theory which states that planets in our solar system, including Earth, revolve around the Sun. This destroyed Aristotelian physics which said that the earthly world was very different from the heavenly world.
Scientific Method
Proving something is true with proof and experiments and not with ancient authorities and sacred texts.
Kepler
Creator of the three laws of motion, he proved that the sun is at the center of our solar system.
Bacon
Stated that new knowledge had to be proven through experimental research.
Voltaire
Created appeal for better individuals and institutions with science, logic, and reason which would often challenge (usually indirectly) the Catholic church and Christian theology.
Salon
A places where rich women talked about ANY thing or observation on philosophy, literature, and science.
Wollestonecraft
An extremely strong advocate for women's rights.
