- Properties shared by living organisms
- reproduction metabolism sense and response to environment cellular organization
- what are cells, and how to they fit into organism life
- smallest unit that can live and reproduce. these membrane bound cells are the basis of all life.
- Explain the property of metabolism
- its the ability to capture energy from the environment
- producers vs. consumers
- producers: capture energy from nonliving things (sunshine, etc.(photosynthesis)) consumers- capture energy from other living organisms (eating them) Sun - producers - consumers
- sense and response to the environment
- ability to detect danger, food, mates shelter etc. can adapt to surroundings, etc (ex. flowers attracting bees to pollinate)
- Virus: are they living? why/why not?
- No. lacks cellular organization (no self generated cell membrane), lacks capacity for independent metabolism, lacks capacity to reproduce without host cell (attack existing cell, transfer protein synthesis, DNA replication within cell, assembly, repeat within another
- Biological hierarchy: list them
- molecules, cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, individual organisms, population, community, ecosystem, biome, biosphere
- what are molecules, and what role do they play in the hierarchy?
- smallest unit. two or more atoms held together by strong chemical bonds
- role of cells in the biological hierarchy
- basic unit of life- has plasma membrane containing cytoplasm and DNA
- tissue in bio hierarchy
- made up of many cells to perform specialized tasks
- organs in bio hierarchy
- made up of 2 or more tissues to conduct major body function
- organ system in bio hierarchy
- made of 2 or more organs and extends throughout much of the body
- individual organism in biological hierarchy
- can live and reproduce. are multicellular and made of organs
- population in biological hierarchy
- group of the same species that live in the same habitat
- community in biological hierarchy
- different species in specified area (habitat)
- ecosystem in biological hierarchy
- made up of communities and the physical environment
- biomes
- large regions of earth with similar climate and distinctive community prevails at certain latitudes and elevations. Each has different vegetation and habitat conditions
- What is being done now to reduce human impact?
- strip farming, selective timber harvesting, restoration projects
- What in population?
- an interacting group of single species within a particular area
- what causes population to change in size?
- rate of change (r)= (number of immigrated and new born/current pop)-(number emigrated or died/current population)
- what can be assumed from looking at a J-shaped curve on a graph
- the population is growing exponentially
- what can be assumed from looking at a S-shaped curve on a graph?
- the population has hit a plateau and is stabling out.
- What is mutualism?
- +/+ relationship where both organisms benefit
- what is symbiosis? what is it a form of?
- species that live close, on, or in another species. it branches from mutualism. it can be +/+ or +/-
- What is exploitation?
- +/- interaction, where one is benefited and other is harmed
- what are the 3 types of exploitation?
- parasitism, predation, herbivores
- What is competition?
- -/- interaction. when two species/organisms are using the same resources. the more the two have in common, the more competition between them.
- Interference vs. exploitation
- Interference: direct fighting Exploitation: indirect-causing change among other species, or drive them out. happens when one better off.
