- quantitative research
- gather information in numerical form (surveys, statistics, experiments, etc..)
- qualitative research
- nonnumerical knowledge about the character of information...techniques used to understand the character of experience...how people perceive and make sense of communication
- critical research
- identify and challenge communication practices that oppress, marginalize, or otherwise harm individuals and social groups
- communication
- systematic process in which people interact with and through symbols to create/interpret meanings
- process
- something that is ongoing and continuously in motion for which it is difficult to identify beginnings and endings
- system
- a group of interrelated elements that affect one another
- symbol
- arbitrary, ambiguous, and abstract representations
- meaning
- the significance we bestow on a phenomenon-what it signifies to us
- content level of meaning
- the literal information in a message
- relationship level of meaning
- expressses the relationship between communicators
- noise
- anything that interferes with the intended meaning of communication (sounds as well as pyschological)
- feedback
- response to a message that may be verbal or nonverbal
- intrapersonal
- communication with ourselves...self talk
- interpersonal
- deals with communication between people, usually in close relationships such as friendship and romance
- fantasy theme
- ideas that spin out in a group and capture it's social or task themes
- organizational culture
- understandings about identity and codes of thought and action that members of an organization share
- ethics
- branch of philosophy that deals with the goodness or rightness of particular actions
- perceptions
- an active process of selecting, organizing, and interpreting people, objects, events, situations, ad activities
- communication climate
- the overall feeling or emotional mood between people
- listening
- a complex process that consists of being mindful, hearing, selecting and organizing information, interpreting communication, responding and remembering
