Persia
Now a day Iran. The people there were warriors and nomads that grew cattle.
Cyrus The Great
United the Persians into a powerful ruler. He captured Mesopotamia, Asia Minor and Canaaan. He treated all his new subjects well by letting all the cuptured Jews go back to Israel.
Darius
A ruler of Persia that divided the empire into 20 city-states and each ruled by an official.
Satrapies
The 20 provinces that Darius divided persia into.
Satrap
The official that ruled a city-state in Persia. Their name ment "potector of the kingdom."
Persian Soldiers
Full-time soldiers that were paid by bthe government. They were trained soldiers who guarded the king.
Zorioastrianism
The Persian religion. The founders name was Zoraster who preached after seeing visions of a young man. There is still a small number of followers today.
Marathon
A plain where the Persians were held not too far from Athens.
Xerxes
Next Persian king after his father, Darius, died. He started a new invasion for the second time in Greece, this time with many more troops.
Leonidas
King of the Spartans during the time when Persia attacked Greece for the second time. He served as a commander in that war.
Themistocles
An Athenian general who planned to attack Persia.
Thermopylae
A narrow pass through the mountains that was easy to defend. The Greeks used it to stall the Persians from attacking.
Pheidippides
A messenger who delivered the news to the Greeks that they had won. He ran 25 miles from Marathon to Athens he then collapsed to the ground and died.
Salamis
A narrow strait of water inbetween two areas of land. This was a location where the Greeks and Persians were in battle while on boats.
Platea
A land mass norhtwest of Athens which the Greeks won. This was a main turning point of the wholwre war which the Greeks ended up winning.
