- arbitration
- investigation and determination of a dispute by a neutral decision maker; decision of the neutral part is binding on the opposing parties
- adhesion contract
- standardized contract from in which a party with little or no bargaining power is forced to accept its terms
- abatement
- reduction, termination
- appellant
- party who files an appeal of a verdict or outcome of a trial
- assault
- in tort, threat of imminent bodily harm accompanied by the apparent ability to carry out the threat; in criminal law, often defined as the tort equivalent of battery
- administrative law
- body of rules and regulations having the force of law and promulgated body created by Congress or a State Legislature
- ademption
- satisfaction of a legacy by gift prior to a testator's death
- acknowledgement
- an admission, affirmation, or declaration
- affidavit
- sworn statement in writing taken before a notary public or other authorized officer or official
- adverse possession
- acquiring title to real estate by hostile possession rather than by purchase
- agreement
- meeting of the minds, preliminary to contract formation
- amoritization
- graduatl extinction of a monetary obligation by periodic payments that usually includes interest
- affirmative defense
- the allegation of a responsive pleading, which if it can be proved, negates the allegations of the complaint

- assertion made but not proved
- appeal
- review by a higher court
- amnesty
- sovereign forgetfullness of past acts, usually available for a limited time
- answer
- written pleading by which a defendant responds to the plaintiff's complaint
- acceptance
- in contract law, consent to abide by the terms of an offer; taking or receing a thing in good faith with the intention of retaining it
- adjudication
- judgment or decision of a court
- negligence
- failure to use the care which a reasonable person or prudent person would use in similar circumstances

- abrogation
- annulment of a former law by act of a legislative body, by constitutional authority or by usage
- arraignment
- in criminal law - the hearing at which the accused pleads guilty or not guilty
- accession
- that which increase the size or value of property
- acquittal
- release or discharge from an obligation or liability; in criminal law, a finding of not guilty
- appellee
- party who defends an appeal (generally the State or opposing party in a tort)
- annotation
- remark, note, or commentary intended to illustrate or explain
- novation
- substitution of a new contract, debt, or obligation for an existing one between the same or differnt ones
- agent
- a person authorized by another to act for him/her, one entrusted with another's business
- notary public
- public officer who administers oaths, attests or certifies documents and takes acknowledgments
- appraisal
- evaluation or estimate of the value of property, made by a qualified expert of that specific type of property
- accommodation
- arrangement made as a favor to another rather than for consideration received (not necessarily by contract)
- annul
- cancel, make void, destroy, or to make as if it never was
- affiant
- one who makes or swears to the truth of an affidavit
- motion in limine
- application to a court to rule in advance that specific information is unfairly predjudicial to the plaintiff and will not be mentioned during a trial
