- Sodium Chloride
- Salt found in the ocean.
- Breakers
- the top of a wave that topples over on the shore when the bottom of the wave drags away from the shore, pitching sand and sediments onto the beach.
- Adaptation
- physical, or behavioral changes that allow organisms to survive.
- Chemosynthetic
- Bacteria that uses hydrogen sulfide, that pours from cracks in the earth's crust on the ocean floor, to make food.
- Sunlight Zone
- the top layer of the ocean. The only zone with enough light to support plant-life
- Current
- water that circulates through the ocean around the world, helping to mix it up vertically.
- Density
- the amount of matter in an object determined by mass/volume.
- Bioluminescence
- the production of light by living creatures.
- Pressure
- The amount of force on an object, increasing the closer you get to the ocean floor.
- Continental Shelf
- A gently sloping landform, formed at the edge of most continents
- Salinity
- The amount of salt in a body of water
- Continental Slope
- land that takes a plunge dropping steeply towards the deep-ocean bottom at the edge of a continental shelf.
- Wave
- causes ocean water to rise and fall as it transfers energy; does not move ocean water forward
- Prevailing Winds
- winds that blow continuously in the same general direction.
- Upwelling
- Waters that move up the continental slope from deep in the ocean.
- Tide
- the slow periodic rise and fall of ocean waters.
- Mid-Ocean/Mid-Atlantic Ridge
- a deep sea mountain range running from Iceland to Anarctica; a distance of about 10,000 miles.
- Twilight Zone
- The second layer of the ocean extending from 300 feet to 3,000 feet below sea level. Does not contain producers.
- Abyssal Plains
- Located at depths of more than 13,000 feet; slightly rolling plains
- Deep-Sea Trench
- Deepest spots on the earth. Separates the continental slope from the deep-ocean basin.
