- Isotope
- atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons
- atomic mass
- the average mass of the mixture of an element's isotopes
- periodic table of elements
- a table that represents all of the elements known to man. It is arranged by increasing atomic number.
- Outer energy level (valence) electron
- electrons that are located on the outer most energy level of an atom
- nucleus
- the center of an atom containing the protons and the neutrons. the nucleus contains almost all of the mass of an atom.
- Ion
- a positively of negatively charged atom
- electron
- much smaller than the proton or neutron, having almost no mass at all. it is negatively charged and is found outside of the nucleus in the energy levels of an atom.
- (Chemical) SYMBOL
- one or two letters that are used to represent the name of each element on the periodic table. the first is always capitalized and the second is always lower case.
- netron
- has no charge has a mass of 1amu (atomic mass unit) and is found in the nucleus of an atom.
- atomic number
- represents the number of protons and the number of electrons in an atom. the atomic number of an element is unique to that element
- Atom
- the basic building block of matter and the smallest particle of an element. It consists of subatomic particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons.
- proton
- a positively charged particle with a mass of 1amu (atomic mass unit) and is found in the nucleus of an atom.
- element
- a substance in which all atoms in a sample are alike,
