- synthesis
- a chemical reaction in which 2 or more simple substances combine to form a new more complex sunstance
- compound
- a substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in a specific ratio or proportion
- family
- elemnents in the same vertical column of the periodic table. ALso called a group.
- noble gases
- elemnts which belong in group 18 and are also called inert. they are in active because they have the maximum number of valnce electrons
- chemistry
- the study of the properties of matter and how matter changes
- mixture
- 2 or more substances that are mixed together, but not cheically combined
- conservation of mass
- The priciple stating that matter is not created or destroyed during a chemical reaction
- chemical change
- A change in matter that produces a new substance
- atom
- the smallest particle of an element
- coefficient
- a number in front of a chemical formula in an equation that indicates how many molecules or atoms of each reactant and product are involved in a reaction
- replacement
- a reaction in which one element replaces another in a compound or when two elemts in different compounds trade places.
- chemical equatiion
- a short easy way to show a chemical reaction using symbols instead of words
- subscript
- a number in a chemical formula that tells the number of atoms in a molecule or the ratio of elements in a compound
- group
- elements in the same verticle column of the periodic table. Also called family
- Valence Electron
- The electrons that are farthest away from the nucleus of an atom and are involved in chemical reactions.
- proton
- small positively charges particles that are found in the nucleus of an atom
- decomposition
- a chemical reaction that breaks down compounds into simpler products
- neutron
- small uncharges particles that are found in the nucleus of an atom
- electron dot diagram
- a representation of the number of valence electrons in an atom, using dots placed around the symbol of an element
- reactants
- the substance that enters into a chemical reaction
- chemical reaction
- the process in which substances undergo chemical changes that results in the formation of new substances
- molecule
- a particle made of two or more atoms bonded together
- symbol
- a one or two letter set of characters that is used to identify an element
- element
- a substance that cannot be broken down into any otehr substances by chemical or physical means
- solution
- a well -mixed mixture
- chemical formula
- a combination of symbols that represent the elemnts in a compound
- products
- a substances formed as a result of a chemical reaction
- chemical bond
- a force that holds atoms together
- precipitate
- a solid that forms from a solution during a chemical reaction
- physical change
- a change that alters the form or appearance of a material but does not make the material into another substance
- nucleus
- the central core of the atom, containing protons and usually neutrons
- electrons
- tiny negatively charges, high energy particles that move around outside the nucleus of an atom
- atomic number
- the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
- period
- elemnts in the same horizontal row of the periodic table
- halogen
- an elemnt belonging to Group 17 of the periodic table
