- DIATOMACEOUS EARTH
- Skeletal remains of diatoms, aquatic organisms with hard shells made of silica
- CHEMICAL REACTION
- A change that occurs as a result of mixing two or more materials together. A reaction results in the formation of new materials with different properties from the original ones.
- SATURATED SOLUTION
- A solution in which no more material will dissolve and additional material settles to the bottom like a beach
- DENSITY
- The amount of mass that a material has for its volume.
- DILUTE
- A solution less concentrated made usually by adding more liquid.
- BOILING
- The name for the process of the vaporization of liquid, usually of water.
- EVAPORATE
- To dry up or to change from a liquid to a gas
- FREEZING
- The process by which a substance changes from its liquid to its solid state.
- SOLUTION
- A special mixture that is formed when a material dissolves in a liquid and cannot be filtered out
- SODIUM CHLORIDE
- A white, crystalline material that dissolves in water also known as table salt
- SCIENTIFIC METHOD
- The sequence of actions which includes stating a problem, predicting, planning, and carrying out an experiment, recording data, and drawing a conclusion.
- MOLECULE
- A chemically combined group of two or more like or unlike atoms.
- GAS
- One of the three phases of matter. The other two being liquid and solid. Carbon dioxide is one example of this.
- PROPERTY
- A characteristic of an object. Something you can observe such as size, color, shape or texture.
- VOLUME
- A three-dimensional space occupied by something
- DISSOLVE
- The process of a material mixing with a liquid in a special way. When salt mixes with water, it seems to disappear and cannot be seen until the water dries up
- MELTING
- The process by which a substance changes from its solid to its liquid state.
- CHANGE
- A word that means to become different
- SOLUBILITY
- The property that substances have of dissolving in solvents, such as the solubility of salt in water.
- MIXTURE
- Two or more materials mixed or stirred together
- ATOM
- What the smallest part of matter called
- CRYSTAL
- The solid from of a material that can be identified by its special shape or pattern. Examples include salt, quartz, and ice.
- MASS
- The amount of matter that is in an object.
- PRECIPITATE
- A solid material that forms as a product of a reaction.
- ELEMENT
- Something that is found on the periodic table. It contains only atoms of the same type.
- CONCENTRATION
- The amount of material dissolved in a measure of liquid. The more material dissolved in the liquid, the more concentrated the solution.
- COMPOUND
- A substance that is composed of two or more elements, combined chemically.
