Light plot
The chart showing where the instruments should be hung and the directions for plugging and focusing them
Border
Another name for a teaser, the horizontal masking found at the top edge of a stage opening
Repertory Company
A theatrical company that performs several plays regularly and in alternate sequence
Pre-set
Scenery, props, or lighting cues that are set before the house opens or a scene begins
Footlights
Strip lights placed at the front of the apron, which shine upward from the stage floor
Representational
A style of performance where the characters exist in "their world", acting as if this is real life, making no acknowledgment of an audience
Ellipsoidal
A lighting instrument that is tube like and has dimming shutters, having two lenses and gives a full area of bright light; also called a Leko (a common brand name)
Muslin
A canvas like material used for set construction, most often on flats, usually cream in color and easy to paint on
Scoop
A lighting instrument without a lens used to provide flood lighting over a general area on stage
Work lights
A general lighting used for rehearsal or technical work only; it is not patched through a dimmer board
Drop
A large piece of scenery which may be lowered from overhead onto the stage
Base
The foundation color of a makeup used for the primary skin color
Strip lights
A series of small lamps in a long metal tray that give a general, unfocused light; often times the lamps are different colors; also called a Tray
Practical
A piece of scenery, props, or lighting equipment that the actors use in the set, and which actually works ( i.e. an opening window, or a light that turns on and off)
Latex
A rubber like material used to build flexible, three-dimensional makeup pieces
Gobo
A metal cutout that is placed in front of the lens of a lighting instrument to create different shadowed images on stage
Dramaturg
One who works in the theatre as a resource for the history of plays and dramatic literature. They research, study, write, and often teach this material to others
Scrim
A piece of loosely woven scenery material that looks solid when light shines
Production book
The copy of the script kept by the Stage Manager, which contains all the information for running a given show
Wagon
A platform used on stage that has wheels or casters
Swing
A type of actor who studies and learns multiple parts within a cast, keeping able to perform any of those roles in any given performance
Gel
A piece of colored medium placed in front of the lens of a lighting instrument to change the color of the light; held in place by a metal frame that is inserted
Conservatory
A school devoted completely to the study of the fine and performing arts
Par can
A simple, tube like lighting instrument used for general lighting
Batten
A pipe or wood strip from which lighting instruments or scenery can be hung
Lamp
A light bulb that is housed in stage lighting instruments
Hot spot
The brightest part or the center of a lighting area
Ground cloth
A large piece of canvas spread on the stage floor, usually painted to act as a floor for the set
Tormentor
Another name for a leg; which is long vertical masking in a proscenium stage, helping to block the backstage
Flood
Unfocused, general lighting used on stage
Tech Rehearsal
A rehearsal in which all technical cues are established and practiced; could be run as a cue to cue with or without actors present
Allusion
Indirect reference to a person, place, or thing, often found within a scripted play
Royalty
the fee paid to the playwright or holder of the copyright in return for the right to perform the work in public
Teaser
A long, narrow horizontal drape which masks the overhead areas of a proscenium stage, specifically hanging to mask lighting instruments and to help frame the stage
Fresnel
A lighting instrument with a series of circular ridges around a single lens; gives much focused, soft edged lighting (named for its inventor)
Revolve
A type of stage that has the ability to spin around (used for set changes and motion)
Leg
A tall, narrow drape used to mask the wings on a proscenium stage
Cyclorama
A large, smooth drape at the rear of a proscenium stage used for special lighting effects, usually as a sky
Patch
To connect the lighting circuits to the dimming circuits, usually through a panel called the Patch board
Running lights
Found backstage to dimly illuminate passageways for actors and technicians, usually blue in color
Equity Union
An organization that represents professional actors and stage managers, setting rules, guidelines, and standards of the work ethics and pay scales within the business of theatre
