- Auditory Localization
- Locating the source of a sound in space.
- Binocular Depth Cues
- Clues about distance based on the differing views of the two eyes.
- Comparitors
- People, objects, events, and other standards that are used as a baseline for comparisons in making judgements.
- Complementary Colors
- Pairs of colors taht produce gray tones when added together.
- Convergence
- A cue to depth that involves sensing the eyes converging toward each other as they focus on closer objects.
- Distal Stimuli
- Stimuli that lie in the distance (that is,in the world outside the body).
- Feature Analysis
- The process of detecting specific elements in visual input an assembling them into a more complex form.
- Feature Detectors
- Neurons taht respond selectively to very specific features of more complex stimuli.
- Phi Phenomenon
- The illusion of movement created by presenting visual stimuli in rapid succession.
- Frequency Theory
- The theory that perception of pitch corresponds to the rate, or frequency, at which the entire basilar membrane vibrates.
- Gate-Control Theory
- The idea that incoming pain sensations must pass through a "gate" in the spinal cord that can be closed, thus blocking pain signals.
- Kinesthetic System
- The sensory system taht onitors the positions of the various parts of one's body.
- Monocular Depth Cues
- Clues about distance based on the image fromn either eye alone.
- Motion Parallax
- Cue to depth that involves images of objects at different distances moving across teh retina at different rates.
- Parallel Processing
- Simultaneously extracting different kinds of information from the same input.
- Perceptual Set
- A readiness to perceive a stimulus in a particular way.
- Signal-Detection Theory
- A psychophysiological theory proposing tha tthe detection of stimuli involves decision processes as well as sensory processes, which are influenced by a variety of factors besides the physical intensity of a stimulus.
- Vestibular System
- The sensory system that responds to gravity and keeps people informed of their body's location in space.
- Visual Agnosia
- An inability to recognize objects.
- Circadian Rhythms
- The 24-hour biological cycles found in humans and many other species.
